The Freedom to Read is on the Ballot in Utah in 2024

Utahns who care about the Freedom to Read are encouraged to pay close attention to their ballots in the 2024 election.

The legislature has passed, and the governor has signed, two bills (HB374 in 2022 and HB29 in 2024) that have led to the unprecedented banning of books from Utah school library shelves.

Utah has the terrible distinction of being the ONLY state in the union that has mandated “no read” list of books to be banned in ALL Utah schools, taking away the local control of voters and school boards. Utah has passed two laws that have led to the banning of over 145 books — that we know of — in Utah schools.

When voting in 2024, please consider candidates’ views and actions related to book banning.
